Hopetherm
Industrial design
Medical devices are an increasingly common focus of our industrial design work, and Hopetherm is one of those projects. We co-developed this core body temperature thermometer with engineers from Consultronix S.A. and CX Engineering, a manufacturer of medical devices. The idea for the whole undertaking came from Dr. Tomasz Darocha, MD, PhD, an anesthesiology specialist and coordinator of extracorporeal treatment for patients in deep hypothermia. Specialists from the Cracow University of Technology provided consultation.
Our main goal was to design a medical device that withstands extreme weather conditions. The device meets the IP68 standard, meaning it’s both waterproof and dustproof. It’s also ergonomic and easy to use in harsh conditions, for example by mountain rescuers during a winter rescue operation. For the enclosure, we chose CNC machining. As the base material, we selected a specialty plastic used, among other things, to make durable automotive parts.
The project was co-funded by the European Union under Measure 2.1 Support for Investment in R&D Infrastructure, as part of “Development of the Research and Development Center for Innovative Technologies for Medicine at Consultronix S.A.”
